Light Yagami is the high-achieving student at the centre of Death Note. His boredom gives way to an extraordinary discovery: a notebook capable of killing a person whose name is written in it. He decides to use that power to eliminate criminals, describing his aim as ridding the world of evil. VIZ series and anime introduction
This profile stays with the TV series' opening premise. Light's declared goal and chosen method already create a question worth considering, without revealing where his campaign leads.
A student who appoints himself judge
The important part of Light's introduction is the decision that follows the discovery. Possessing a dangerous object does not, on its own, determine what someone will do with it. Light chooses a campaign of killing. VIZ anime synopsis
Our reading is that this turns his personal judgment into the central problem of the premise. He claims a goal for the whole world, while appointing himself the person who will decide how to achieve it.
That distinction matters when describing him. “He wants to remove evil” reports his stated ambition. It does not establish that his judgments are correct or that his actions become good because he describes them that way.
Intelligence and a lethal advantage
VIZ introduces Light as an exceptionally capable student. The notebook gives him a power of an entirely different kind from academic achievement. VIZ character setup
For us, the combination creates an unsettling contrast. Being able to reason effectively is different from having the authority to determine another person's fate. Cleverness can help someone pursue an objective without resolving whether that objective or its methods are defensible.
The notebook's lethal premise is enough for this introduction. Its full rules, experiments and later uses are something to encounter within the series, rather than a checklist of revelations to reproduce here.
L brings opposition
As the killings attract attention, the detective L takes up the case. VIZ presents their opposition as a contest of intellect. VIZ anime introduction
That gives Light a specific relationship to understand at the outset: someone is working against what he has chosen to do. We read the resulting tension as more than a question of which person is cleverer. The investigation also places his self-appointed mission under challenge.
Knowing that challenge exists is part of the introductory setup. The methods, identities and outcomes of the investigation are left to the story.
Why follow him?
Light illustrates why “protagonist” and “hero” are different descriptions. A story can follow a person's decisions closely while giving us reasons to question them.
His opening appeal as a thriller character lies in the collision between ability, conviction and unchecked power. Understanding the ambition that drives him does not require accepting his justification for killing. Whether and how that ambition changes is something this introduction leaves for viewers to discover.
